Container Shoring, what exactly is it? And why is it so important? Released

Container Shoring is a general term referring to all operations involved in securing and supporting cargo loaded inside a container to prevent it from shaking or moving during transportation. 

Simply put, you can think of it as all actions of tying, supporting, and filling to ensure that cargo safely stays in place inside a container.

Beyond simply securing cargo, shoring plays a crucial role in protecting cargo from external impacts and vibrations that are unavoidable due to the nature of maritime transport. 

Cargo is exposed to immense impacts and shaking in various situations, such as on stormy days, sudden movements of the vessel, and loading/unloading operations at ports. 

If shoring is not properly done, cargo can be damaged, or it could even lead to major accidents such as cargo breaking through the container wall or damaging other cargo.

Problems arising from inadequate shoring are more serious than you might think.

1. Cargo Damage: This is the most direct problem. Cargo can be damaged or deformed by moving or colliding inside the container. This is particularly critical for fragile items such as glass products, precision machinery, and furniture.

2. Safety Accidents: Unsecured cargo can spill out when the container door is opened or fall on workers, causing serious injuries. Additionally, collisions between cargo inside the container can increase the risk of fire or explosion.

3. Shipping Delays and Additional Costs: If cargo damage occurs, transportation schedules can be delayed and substantial additional costs incurred due to claim processing, repackaging, and re-shipping. In the worst-case scenario, the entire cargo might have to be disposed of.

4. Legal Liabilities and Disputes: If cargo damage or accidents occur due to inadequate shoring, legal disputes over liability can arise among relevant parties, including the shipper, carrier, and packing company. This can lead to damage to corporate image and a decrease in trustworthiness.
