Spain, the land of the sun, as a member of the European Union (EU), follows duty-free standards similar to other EU countries. However, the VAT refund (DIVA system) procedure is highly digitized, so using it effectively is key.
The following summary provides information on VAT refunds and the duty-free limits and cash declaration regulations required upon entry.
These are the duty-free limits for items brought from abroad when entering Spain (Based on those aged 17 or older).
| Item Type | Duty-Free Limit | Notes |
| General Goods Limit | Up to 430 Euros | For air/sea travel (300 Euros for land, 150 Euros for those under 15) |
| Tobacco | 200 cigarettes (10 packs) | Choice of one: 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco |
| Alcohol (Over 22%) | 1 Liter | Spirits such as whisky, vodka, etc. |
| Alcohol (22% or below) | 2 Liters | Fortified wine, sparkling wine, etc. |
| Other Alcohol | 4L non-sparkling wine, 16L beer | Can be added separately from the alcohol limits above |
Declaration Threshold: When carrying 10,000 Euros or more (or equivalent in foreign currency/checks, etc.) per person.
Obligation to Declare: This applies to both entry and exit. Failure to declare to the Tax Agency (Agencia Tributaria) may result in the seizure of funds and the imposition of fines.
Since 2018, Spain has abolished the minimum purchase amount limit, allowing refunds even for small purchases. However, please note that there are detailed tax rate changes as of 2025, such as fluctuations in the VAT rate for olive oil (e.g., 4%).
At the Store: Look for the 'Tax Free' sign and request electronic refund documents (DER/DIVA) when making a purchase. (Passport is required)
At the Airport: Before checking in, locate a DIVA kiosk in the airport and scan the barcode on your documents.
Validation is complete if a green check mark appears!
If a red light appears or the document doesn't scan, you must get physical validation (a stamp) directly from a customs officer.
Requirements: Purchased goods, original receipts, passport, and boarding pass (or booking details). Goods must be in unused condition, and a customs officer may request to inspect them.
Direct Store Refund: If you send the validated documents back to the store, you will be refunded within 15 days (claims can be made for up to 4 years from the date of purchase).
Using an Agency: You can receive an immediate refund (minus a fee) by submitting your documents at an agency counter, such as Global Blue, located at the airport.
π‘ Tip: Madrid and Barcelona airports are always crowded. It is highly recommended to arrive at least 4 to 5 hours before your flight's departure.
Medication: It is safest to bring personal medication in its original packaging along with an English prescription.
Food: Bringing meat, milk, and dairy products from outside the EU is strictly prohibited (be careful with items like sandwiches).
Domestic Transaction Limits: When paying in cash within Spain, cash payments exceeding 1,000 Euros per person are prohibited. Please prepare a card for high-value purchases.
As Spain is a shopping paradise, the VAT refund benefits (up to 21%) are quite significant.
Without validation at an airport kiosk (DIVA), a refund is impossible, so don't forget to check!
